Episode 18

The Mutual Boardcasting System brings you another episode of Life in Hyperion.

Today's episode: "The Streets of This Town", Part 6

Yesterday, after Cy's hosting assignment concluded, Phil received an offer from Officer Grace for a date, which Phil happily accepted. He then received an offer from his old bully Thomas Cinder to spend a night at Phil's house, which Phil allowed, but only for one night. As we begin, Phil has just sent Thomas back onto the streets...

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cy makes his way into the green room as he dances his way in. As he enters the green room, Phil is pouring a cup of coffee.
"Happy hump day, Cy." says Phil.
"Right back at'cha." says Cy, sitting himself down in a chair.
"What's with you today?" asks Phil, taking a sip of his coffee.
"I had the best night so far with my new girl Joanne last night." says Cy.
"You two finally do it?" asks Phil.
"Of course not. I gave her a serenade. Actually, we both did." says Cy.
"You are a hopeless romantic." says Phil.
"That I am." says Cy.
"Why haven't you done it yet?" asks Phil.
"Because I haven't earned it yet." says Cy.
"Earn it? How do you earn doing it?" asks Phil.
"My mother told me that you should wait in a new relationship until you have
earned the right to make love with your girl." says Cy.
"How does that help?" asks Phil.
"If you do it just to do it, it loses all the flavor. If you wait until it becomes part of
the natural process of a relationship, then it has been earned and the two lovers are
forever together." says Cy.
"Then why haven't you married yet?" asks Phil.
"Because waiting also helps to make sure you love someone. Most of the time, by
the time you make love, it's just a formality." says Cy.
"What a genius your mother was." says Phil.
Just then, the phone rings. Cy rushes over and picks up the receiver.
"Johnny.... I mean, Cy Scott." says Cy.
"Cy, you have a phone call from Conrad." says Loni.
"Just patch me through and forget the charges." says Cy.
"Okay." says Loni as she patches in the call.
"Cy?" says Conrad on the other end.
"Conrad, don't tell me you're still sick?" asks Cy.
"This cold refuses to go away. I'm making progress." says Conrad.
"Wise precaution." says Cy.
"I guess I can make it to work." says Conrad.
Cy looks over at the clock in the green room, which reads 8:09 am.
"No, you stay home for the day." says Cy.
"Thanks." says Conrad.
Cy then hangs up the phone.
"Sick again?" asks Phil.
"I can't help it if his body is a little off today." says Cy.
"I guess I'm on hosting duty again." says Phil.
"The following show you're about to do is the same as yesterday. Only the words
have been changed to protect the listener from losing it." says Cy.
"With that kind of help, I know I can ace today." says Phil.
The night brings a chill to the air, which is normal for the late summer. In one part of town walks Thomas Cinder. Thomas walks alone, still carrying the guitar case, looking at his old house, now an empty shell.
As he stares, he thinks about how his life was and the way it is now. He also feels
something's wrong, like the house isn't empty. He feels people inside, even if the windows are dark and there's no sign of life, he feels it.
He just checks it to his mind and decides to go up to the house. As he walks, he
wonders what is inside. He finally reaches the door and opens it. Inside, it's devoid of anything, just the way it was left when Thomas went off to prison.
Thomas decides to sleep on the floor, hoping his memories will keep him warm. He puts down his guitar case and lays down next to the door and lulls himself to sleep,
with his dreams of his childhood keeping him company.
His dream is anything but happy. In the dark, he sees the outline of his father,
beer can in hand, looking at him. He opens his eyes and sees the sight.
"Hello, son." growls Mr. Cinder in a southern accent.
"Hello, dad." says Thomas.
"I see you're back." says Mr. Cinder as he takes a sip of beer.
"I know. I just got out of prison." says Thomas.
"So I hear." says Mr. Cinder.
"I blame myself for going there." says Thomas.
"It's all your fault, son." says Mr. Cinder as he takes another sip of beer.
"No, it's not. It's your fault." says Thomas.
"Watch it, son." says Mr. Cinder.
"I mean it, the way you raised me... " says Thomas.
"I told you to watch it." says Mr. Cinder, stepping closer to Thomas.
"I can't believe how you raised me." says Thomas as he gets off the floor.
"Keep your mouth shut, boy." says Mr. Cinder.
"When you died, I didn't shed a single tear." says Thomas.
"That's it, boy. You're gonna get it now." says Mr. Cinder, making a move
towards Thomas.
Thomas then moves out of his dream, grabs the guitar case, starts running, and
bursts through the door and runs from the house, scared that his father will follow him.
He runs down the street and into a collection of trash cans. His collision alerts a cop car,
which comes by the cans.
"Guys, my dead father trying to kill me." he spews out.
"A hobo?" says the driving officer.
"Most likely." says the passenger officer.
Together, the two drag Thomas into their car and drive away, with Thomas
shouting, "I hate you, dad!" over and over.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Tomorrow, Conrad returns from his bout with illiness and Thomas, locked in the city jail, makes a very unlikely friend.

Episode 17

The Mutual Broadcasting System brings you another episode of Life in Hyperion.

Today's episode: "The Streets of This Town", Part 5

Yesterday, Cy went on the air, hosting the weekly law relations show at WHYP. During the show, he asks important questions and fields phone calls from interested and semi-imvolved people. As we begin, the end of the show has arrived...

----------------------------------------------------------------------

When the show ends, Cy signs off and the panel members get out of their chairs
and head for the door, except Officer Grace, who walks over to Cy. Phil looks on and
sees Officer Grace whisper something in Cy's ear.
Phil can't tell anything due to the soundproof nature of the control room. Officer
Grace then backs away and Cy gets up from his chair. Cy then walks into the control
room, followed by Officer Grace.
"Phil, I believe Officer Grace would like to talk to you." says Cy.
"Okay." gulps Phil as Officer Grace walks over.
"Take your time." says Cy as he walks to a corner of the room.
"I'll leave now." says the engineer as he switches to some NPR feed for the night
and leave the control room.
"Well, what do you want?" asks Phil.
"Well, Cy has told me that you may have a crush on me." says Officer Grace.
Phil looks over at Cy, who gives a little wave.
"Well, maybe a little crush but I would never go too far." says Phil.
"Because of our ages?" queries Officer Grace.
"No, I mean, you're... 32 and I'm... 21 and that's no reason." says Phil in his best
babble.
"Don't let that get in the way because I've been having some feelings for you,
too." says Officer Grace.
Phil nearly loses it.
"You... have feelings... for me?" says Phil.
"A little, ever since I first saw you." says Officer Grace.
"The feeling is mutual." says Cy.
"Anyway, I was wondering if you would like to go out with me this Friday, if it's
all right with you." says Officer Grace.
Phil stands there for a minute as he ponders Officer Grace's offer.
Finally, Phil answers, "Yes."
Officer Grace gives Phil a hug and says, "See ya Friday."
Cy watches Officer Grace leave the room and then, walks over to Phil.
"Well, Phil, you got a date." says Cy.
"Yeah, with Officer Grace." says Phil.
15 minutes later, outside the radio station, Phil exits with Cy as the both of them begin their way home.
"I hope you'll do well on your date." says Cy.
"Me, too." says Phil.
"Hey, Phil." says a voice.
Cy and Phil look around and spy Thomas, standing on the sidewalk near them.
"What are you doing here?" asks Phil.
"I have a favor to ask you." says Thomas.
"I'll just keep walking. See you tomorrow, Phil." says Cy, who then walks away.
"What do you want out of me, Thomas?" asks Phil.
"A place to stay." says Thomas.
"I don't know of any." says Phil.
"How about your place?" asks Thomas.
"Why would I let my former bully stay with me?" asks Phil.
"Can't you forget that and just help me?" asks Thomas.
"I can't forget all the things you did to me and I never will." says Phil.
"I've spent the last few years realizing the pain I've caused others and I wish to start anew." says Thomas.
"I don't know if I can trust you." says Phil.
"Just for one night, let go of the past and take me in." says Thomas.
Phil just stands there for a moment as he thinks over Thomas' request. Finally, after a minute, Phil speaks, "I will, but just for one night."
"Thanks, Phil. I promise to do my best." says Thomas.
"We'll see about that." says Phil as he and Thomas get underway.
30 minutes later, Phil and Thomas arrive at Phil's house. As Phil turns on the lights, Thomas makes his way around.
"What a place you got." says Thomas.
"It's home to me but only a one-night rest for you." says Phil.
"I'll take it over a prison cell." says Thomas.
"How long did you spend?" asks Phil.
"About five years, after I left the juvie hall." says Thomas.
"So I heard from some of my fellow victims." says Phil.
"Who's the gal in the picture?" asks Thomas as he picks up the picture of a young lady off a table.
"None of your business." says Phil.
"Must've been important to you if you kept her picture." says Thomas.
"Put it down or out you go." says Phil.
"Who's the bully now?" says Thomas as he puts the picture down.
"I didn't mean it that way." says Phil.
"It's a classic set-up. The bullied getting their revenge on the bully." says Thomas.
"I can't help it, after all the damage you caused." says Phil.
"If you can look past that, I believe we can be friends." says Thomas.
"Just rest up, you'll need it." says Phil, who then makes his way into the bedroom.
"I guess I get to sleep on the couch." says Thomas.
The next day arrives with the sunrise. With the sunrise, as always, brings a new day. At Phil's house, Thomas is sleeping away on the couch, hugging his guitar case like someone would hug a loved one.
Phil walks out of his bedroom all dressed up and ready to go for the day at hand. As he starts to make his way to the door, he spies Thomas still sleeping. Phil then changes course and makes his way over to the couch.
"Wake up!" shouts Phil, awakening Thomas from his slumber.
"I was having a wonderful dream until you woke me up." says Thomas.
"I'm sorry to disturb your sleep, but it's time for you to go." says Phil.
"Why now? How about a bite to eat?" asks Thomas.
"I'll give you enough for you to get some breakfast but now, you must leave." says Phil.
"Why are you doing this to me?" asks Thomas.
"Because I don't want my bully living with me." says Phil.
"That was a long time ago. Can't you ever get over it?" says Thomas, getting off the couch.
"Not me." says Phil.
"The bully getting bullied." says Thomas.
"Why did you even stay with me? I mean, you have your own house to go home to." says Phil.
"Not with all the memories there." says Thomas.
"You said you wish to make amends for all the pain you caused. Well, you need to confront your pain first." says Phil.
"I guess I should leave and think about going home." says Thomas as he makes his way to the front door.
"Let me give you some money." says Phil as he reaches for his wallet.
"Thanks." says Thomas.
"It's the best I can do." says Phil, handing over a fair amount to Thomas.
"You're welcome." says Thomas, who then makes his way out the door.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tomorrow, illiness once again strikes WHYP and Thomas, with no place to turn to, goes home and confronts the past he finds there.

Episode 16

The Mutual Broadcasting System brings you another episode of Life in Hyperion.

Today's episode: "The Streets of This Town", Part 4

Last week, we ended our first serial and began our second serial. So far, Cy and Joanne concluded their first date, Cy went into work, received an assignment from Mr. Gold, and learned that Conrad is suffering from the flu, causing Phil to take his place. As we begin this week, Cy and Phil ready to go on air...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Eventually, the end of Barry and Terry's show arrives and Cy and Phil enter the
control room as the duo sign off.
"Well, I hope you'll stay tuned to the Cy & Conrad Show, coming up next." says
Barry.
The closing theme then starts playing as Barry and Terry make their way out of
the studio.
"Hey, Cy. Where's Conrad?" asks Barry.
"He's out this morning. In his place, I have decided to debut Phil here." says Cy.
"I see. What happened, Conrad finally give up?" says Terry.
"Terry, I have much better things to do than listen to you." says Cy.
Cy and Phil then file past Barry and Terry and enter the studio. Cy takes his place
by his mic, with Phil taking Conrad's usual spot.
"Ready, Phil?" asks Cy.
"Ready." says Phil.
The opening theme to the show starts as Cy's mic is opened and Cy speaks, "Good
morning, City of Hyperion. This is the Cy & Conrad Show. This is Cy Scott, and today, my friend Conrad is not here, so in his place is WHYP intern Phil Turner!"
Cy then makes applause sounds by beating his hands on his stomach.
"Thank you, ladies and gentlemen." says Phil.
"Here at WHYP, we radio personalities have our own little intern, who is shared
by all. These interns are to study our methods and learn from us. Let me say, Phil has learned a lot." says Cy.
"Thanks, Cy. That's nice to hear." says Phil.
"Let us begin today's broadcast with some news." says Cy.
"I agree." says Phil.
The hour soon comes and goes. Phil manages to do pretty well as Cy's co-host
and even made his own mark. The show ends with Phil saying, "Tomorrow, your regular
sidekick will be here."
The closing theme plays and Cy and Phil exit the studio.
"Good show today, including Phil." says the engineer.
"Thanks." says Phil.
"Well, time now to study, which means time for the library." says Cy, who then makes his way out of the control room.
"Well, I guess I better help you get ready." says Phil.
"It's just like you to do that. I'm trying to handle this. I didn't ask for it." says Cy.
"Well, maybe Mr. Gold will actually hire someone else to do the show." says Phil.
"I know Mr. Gold and as long as he can use his still-on-the-payroll employees,
he'll never go to the trouble of hiring someone." says Cy.
"If you say so." says Phil.
"Now, let's get to work reading this and figuring out what I will say to our panel."
says Cy.
"Let's do that." says Phil.
That evening, at 8:00 pm, Cy takes the mike in the studio, where sits three people
across from him, including Officer Grace. Phil looks on from the control room.
Cy speaks into the mike in his radio voice, "And now, it's eight o'clock here on WHYP, so that means it's time for our Tuesday night series on the world of the law, the WHYP Law School. As always, we have our panel of law experts, each from different levels of law enforcement.
"We have Judge Gus Sheperd, our lawyer Mike Armstrong, and police officer Grace Baker of the Hyperion Police Department. I'm your guest host this week, Cy Scott. Now, I have a batch of questions here for you, and we'll have some phone calls coming in during the show."
"He's gettting it." says the engineer.
"I think we learned enough." says Phil.
"Now, let's get to our first question, and it's a listener question. 'If you set your
house on fire, would that be considered arson?'." says Cy.
Officer Grace answers first, "Yes, if that was your idea to start it."
"But what if it was a complete accident?" asks Cy.
"Then it wouldn't be arson since there was no intent." says Officer Grace.
"Next question, and this is for the lawyer and the judge. Have you ever used your
legal standing to commit an illegal act?" says Cy.
"I'm not sure I can answer that." says Mike.
"For legal sake, let's use the simplest one." says Cy.
"Well, I have used my authority to pay off parking tickets." says Gus.
"And have you ever been caught?" asks Cy.
"Outside this show?" asks Gus.
"Yes." says Cy.
"Once, one of my clerks caught me pencil-whipping a parking ticket and he blast
me for it." says Gus.
"I hope that clerk ended up working in another county after that." says Cy.
"You're right." says Gus.
"Now, let us move on to a phone question, and we have a light on, so let us press
on." says Cy, who then pushes the active line.
"I have a question for the police officer." says the man on the phone.
"Go on." says Officer Grace.
"Well, let's say someone rapes your daughter and the police do nothing to help
you, is that against the law?" says the man on the phone, who Phil and Officer Grace
figure out is Mr. Shaw.
"Mr. Shaw, I told you, we can't do anything right now." says Officer Grace.
"How did you know it was me?" asks Mr. Shaw.
"Your voice was familiar." says Officer Grace.
"Mr. Shaw, if you don't have a real question... " says Cy.
"That was a real question and I would like an answer." says Mr. Shaw.
"Please answer so we can get rid of him." whispers Cy to Officer Grace.
Officer Grace proceeds to answer Mr. Shaw's question,
"Mr. Shaw, if there is enough evidence to suggest the identity of the man who
raped your daughter, he will be arrested."
"I hope that answers your question, Mr. Shaw." says Cy as he cuts off the call, as
so he can spare the listening audience any further comments from Mr. Shaw.
"What a nutcase. His daughter was raped four weeks ago and they still haven't
caught who did it." says Phil.
"I know it." says the engineer.
Phil watches the rest of the show as Cy shows off his new knowledge of the law.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tomorrow, Phil receives an offer of his own, two of them, in fact, and a romance makes a right turn, for the better.

Episode 15

The Mutual Broadcasting System brings you another episode of Life in Hyperion.

Today's episode: "The Streets of This Town", Part 3

Yesterday, Cy finally arrived at WHYP. As he waited for Phil, he was met by Mr. Gold, who told him that he is to host the law relations program, which Cy accepted. Phil soon arrived and as we begin, Cy and Phil are waiting for Conrad...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just then, the phone rings in the green room. Cy rushes over and picks it up.
"Johnny Dollar... I mean, Cy Scott." says Cy.
"Hello, you have a phone call." says Loni, the radio station secretary at the front
desk.
"Who from?" asks Cy.
"It's Conrad, dear." says Loni.
"Put me through." says Cy.
"Cy, Cy?" says Conrad.
"Conrad, why aren't you here, as if I didn't know?" asks Cy.
"That cold you were warning me about finally caught me and I can't get enough to get out of bed." says Conrad.
"Did you try?" asks Cy.
"I took some cold medication and I'm half-asleep as it is." says Conrad.
"Well, what do I do now?" asks Conrad.
"You stay home until your body wins its war against this cold." says Cy.
"I guess I have no choice, but what about my job?" says Conrad.
"I'll use Phil today. It's time for a promotion." says Cy.
"Okay, but only for you." says Conrad, who then hangs up.
"Who was it, Cy?." asks Phil.
"It's Conrad. The flu has got him in bed." says Cy.
"Well, even someone like Conrad isn't immune from diaease." says Phil.
"My mother wasn't. Why should I be immune?" says Cy.
"Shall we rehearse my radio debut?" asks Phil.
"Relax. You already know what to do." says Cy.
"Excuse me?" asks a man standing in the doorway.
He is dressed in a brown jacket. Underneath it is a blue button shirt, with the
jacket hiding a prison number printed on it. In his hand is a guitar case.
"Thomas?" says Phil.
"Who is this?" asks Cy.
"It's my former bully, Thomas Cinder." says Phil.
"Phil, nice to see you." says Thomas.
"I wish I could say the same." says Phil.
"I see." says Thomas.
"I think I'll go to the control room. I'll leave you two alone." says Cy, who then
departs the green room.
"How did you find me here?" asks Phil as he walks to a chair across from Thomas.
"I asked an old friend of mine where you were and he told me that you worked
here." says Thomas.
"I see. What is it that you needed to see me about?" says Phil.
"Well, I just got out of prison, you know, and I decided to come back here." says
Thomas.
"I knew that you would go to prison." says Phil.
"I had that coming. When I was young, I did many a bad thing, including bullying
you." says Thomas.
"Well, I grew up nicely." says Phil.
"Good. Now, when I got here, I tried to start a new life." says Thomas.
"That's helpful." says Phil.
"And I wish to start by making you one of my friends." says Thomas.
"No way, Thomas." says Phil.
"Come on, give me a chance." says Thomas.
"In what way?" asks Phil.
"Please, I'm beggin' ya." says Thomas.
"Forget it." says Phil.
"Well, I hope you could help me." says Thomas.
"Me, help you? You're bonkers." says Phil.
"I know, but I can't help it. I need to figure out things." says Thomas.
"Well, my memories of the past say I shouldn't help you." says Phil.
"You almost did, once." says Thomas.
"I remember, and I turned you down." says Phil.
"Yes, I know that, but I was hoping that you would accept this offer." says
Thomas.
"You are definitely losing your mind." says Phil.
"I think I am." says Thomas as he gets up from his chair.
"Listen, I wish I could help." says Phil as he gets up.
"I wish you could, too." says Thomas as he and Phil walk to the door.
"Well, I guess I have no more to say." says Phil as they exit the green room.
"I guess so. See ya." says Thomas as he walks away, down the hallway, towards
the front door.
Phil, a little confused, walks his way from the green room to the control room,
where he finds Cy watching Barry and Terry finishing up their show.
"So, how did your talk with Thomas go?" asks Cy.
"Oh, it went... well." says Phil.
"Come on, Phil. Tell me, what did he want?" says Cy.
"He wanted me to help him." says Phil.
"Help him with what?" asks Cy.
"He wanted me to help him start a new life." says Phil.
"What's wrong with that?" asks Cy.
"How can I have feelings of friendship between us when there isn't any?" says
Phil.
"Are you sure you two weren't friends?" queries Cy.
"I'm sure. I remember no memory of me and Thomas being friends." says Phil.
"Did he say anything else?" asks Cy.
"Nothing, just that he wished us to be friends now." says Phil.
"Well, most ex-cons have a hard time staying out of trouble." says Cy.
"I guess it was the workings of a tortured mind." says Phil.
"I guess so." says Cy.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Next week, Cy goes on the air with Phil, does the same for the law, and a romance grows between a cop and an intern.

Episode 14

The Mutual Broadcasting System brings you another episode of Life in Hyperion.

Today's episode: "The Streets of This Town", Part 2

Yesterday, we began our second serial with Cy and Joanne ending their first date. Cy then went home and watched television until the sun rose. Cy then started walking to work. Along the way, we met Polly McIntyre, the police station janitor and niece of the police chief. As we left off, Polly had just begun her workday...

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Just then, one of Officer Grace's fellow lawkeepers, Officer Timmy, enters the police station with a man, dressed in a plaid shirt, carrying a fiddle case in his arm.
"But officew, I'm tewwing the twuth." says the man, in a cajun accent.
"I know you awe." says Officer Timmy, mocking the man.
"Officer Timmy, what have you done?" asks Polly.
"I got the Hyperion Rapist. He isn't so smart. He confessed to it and he talks in that stupid Elmer Fudd voice, not to mention carrying around his weapon, hidden inside the usual violin case." says Officer Timmy.
"His name is Elmer, and he does play the fiddle." says Polly.
"Elmer?" says Officer Timmy.
"That's what I'm twying to teww you." says Elmer.
"But he confessed to it." says Officer Timmy.
"Was Elmer talking to a lady when he confessed?" asks Polly.
"Yes." says Officer Timmy.
"He likes to confess that he's done various crimes to impress women." says Polly.
"You're kidding?" says Officer Timmy.
"You know, Powwy, I've cweaned my own cwimes fow yeaws." says Elmer.
"I see it now." says Officer Timmy.
"Elmer, would you like to stay for the day?" asks Polly.
"Oh, boy, yes. I get to be a assistant." says Elmer.
"Uncuff him and give him back his case." says Polly.
"Okay." says Officer Timmy, who then uncuffs Elmer.
"What do I do fiwst, Powwy?" asks Elmer.
"Sit in that chair and watch me." says Polly.
"Okay, Powwy." says Elmer, sitting in a chair by a desk.
"I gotta get back to my beat." says Officer Timmy, who then walks out the door.
"I heard something in here." says Chief McIntyre, coming out of his office.
"Hewwo, Chief McIntywe." says Elmer.
"Hello to you, Elmer. Who brought you in this time?" says Chief McIntyre.
"Officew Timmy." says Elmer.
"Well, did you brief him on Elmer, Polly?" asks Chief McIntyre.
"Yes, sir." says Polly.
"I guess you've got a assistant today, Polly." says Chief McIntyre.
"That I am." says Elmer.
"If you're good today, I might pay you." says Chief McIntyre.
"That wouwd be gweat." says Elmer, getting out his fiddle.
Cy soon reaches the radio station and makes his way into the green room. In the green room, Cy takes up a magazine and waits for Phil to arrive, during which Mr. Gold arrives after Cy has been there for 30 minutes.
"I wonder who's gonna my mother's character in this Welcome Back, Kotter movie? Maybe Lindsay Lohan?" says Cy to himself.
"Good morning, Scott." says Mr. Gold as he enters the room.
"Same to you, Mr. Gold." says Cy, still reading his magazine.
"Listen, Scott, I have something to tell you." says Mr. Gold.
"You're firing Barry and Terry?" asks Cy.
"No way, Scott. I've decided to make you this week's host of the WHYP Law School." says Mr. Gold.
"Is it my turn?" asks Cy.
"I make the decisions around here, you just follow them." says Mr. Gold.
"I accept your offer." says Cy.
"You have to." says Mr. Gold, who then leaves the room.
Cy continues to wait for Phil, who arrives about an hour and 15 minutes after Cy's arrival.
"Hello, Cy." says Phil as he enters the green room.
"Morning, Phil. Have a good night sleep?" says Cy.
"I did, and you?" says Phil.
"The same. I feel the Tuesday morning blues, man. I'm one of those people who
have it out for Tuesday as a day of the week. My mother died on a Tuesday, so I have a
little more reason to hate it." says Cy.
"I hear ya." says Phil.
"Besides, Tuesday is the day the station does its series about law enforcement,
which features Officer Grace in a starring role." says Cy.
"That's right. Who's the host this week?" says Phil.
"Believe it or not, I checked the schedule and it's my turn." says Cy.
"Another guest host." says Phil.
"Hard to believe the old host decided to go to law school and become a lawyer in
Chicago." says Cy.
"Me, too. So, how did your date with Joanne go last night?" says Phil.
"As much as a normal first date can be." says Cy, putting down the magazine.
"That good?" asks Phil.
"Not that good. I took her home and that's all I did." says Cy.
"Have a good night's sleep?" asks Phil.
"I didn't sleep. I just watched television. I even caught a re-run of one of my mother's shows." says Cy.
"Good for you. Nice to see you still enjoy them." says Phil.
"I never stopped." says Cy.
"Just which one was it?" asks Phil.
"Welcome Back, Kotter. Specifically, that first one, where she pretends to be
pregnant." says Cy.
"Watched it out of mindfulness?" asks Phil.
"Just watched it. I don't need a reason to watch." says Cy.
"Do you really need one?" asks Phil.
"That was the first time since she died that I sat down and watched something that she acted in." says Cy.
"I can't imagine going five years without seeing something anyone near me was in." says Phil.
"You managed to get that one, Phil." says Cy.

Episode 13

The Mutual Broadcasting System brings you another episode of Life in Hyperion.

Today's episode: "The Streets of This Town", Part 1

Yesterday, we ended our first serial with Cy and Conrad solving the mystery of the missing pinball machine. That night, Cy went back to the Shulman house to take Joanne out on a date and butted heads with Joanne's grandfather. When we last left off, Cy and Joanne went out and now, they return...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cy has just finished his first date with Joanne. The time is about 1:00 am
and Cy is walking Joanne up the driveway to the house. As they finally reach the front door, Joanne opens the door and Cy stands outside.
"I've had a wonderful time, Joanne." says Cy to Joanne, standing inside her house,
ready to close the door.
"Then why don't come in? Extend the date." says Joanne.
"I prefer to wait for awhile, at least until I know if she's ready for me." says Cy.
"Will I know?" asks Joanne.
"My mother taught me to look into a date before checking into their bed." says Cy.
"Smart woman." says Joanne.
"And you're as smart as she." says Cy.
"Good night, Cy." says Joanne as she closed the door.
"What a girl. If you could only met her, Mama." says Cy as he walks away from
the house.
As Cy strolls his way back home, he whistles an old tune very well. The
nighttime streets are quiet. Cy breathes in the night air as he makes his way to a
crosswalk.
He then makes his way into the neighborhood where he lives and takes it the nighttime sounds as they float into his ears. The night air fills Cy's lungs and the smells fill his nose.
He soon reaches his darkened home and walks inside. He sees the dark living room and the gleam coming off his mother's urn sitting on the mantle. He walks his way up to it and stares at it.
"I've just had the time of my life, Mama. Wish you coulda been there." says Cy.
Cy then walks to the couch. He sits down on it and decides to watch a little television before sleeping. Cy turns on the television and watches it for a long time. Eventually, the sun rises as Cy continues to watch television.
Cy notices the time, 6:00 am, on the clock on the wall and decides to head into work. With a close of the door, Cy walks his way from the house to the radio station. Cy's walk is mixed with the sleepiness he feels in his head. However, the feeling fades as the fresh air enters his body. The walk brings back feelings for Cy.
As he walks, he runs into Polly McIntyre, one of his and Conrad's many friends. Her appearence is of a 22-year-old girl, with blackish-brown hair, piled on her head and wearing a mini-skirted dress with a scarf around the middle, with another one around her neck. She also has a gleam in her eyes.
"Good morning, Polly." says Cy as he pulls alongside her.
"Hello, Cy. I've never seen you out this early before." says Polly.
"I'm not usual this awake during this time." says Cy.
"So, why are you?" asks Polly.
"I had an interesting night, last night." says Cy.
"Really? Can you tell me about it?" asks Polly.
"I don't think I can now. I need all my mental strength to get to work." says Cy.
"I'll ask about it later." says Polly.
"Hear that morning music in the air." says Cy.
"What music?" asks Polly.
"The sounds of the birds as they tweet their wake-up calls. The wind blowing
across the street. I tell ya, it reminds me of all those mornings in New York. The song's
different but the melody's the same." says Cy.
"A guy like you never belonged in the city." says Polly.
"I made the most of it, Polly. My mother often wished to escape the city." says
Cy.
"You did it for her." says Polly.
"Thank you, Polly." says Cy as they arrive in front of the police station.
"Here's where I get off." says Polly.
"See you later, Polly." says Cy, continuing by Polly on his way to work.
"What a guy Cy is." says Polly, who then walks up to the front of the police
station and goes inside.
"Good morning, Polly." says Officer Grace as Polly enters.
"Good morning, Officer Grace." says Polly.
"Good morning, my niece." says Chief McIntyre.
"Another day of work?" asks Officer Grace.
"What other kind of work is there?" says Polly as she puts down her guitar case and takes hold of her mop and bucket.
"I guess you're right. I saw you talking to Cy as you walked up." says Officer
Grace.
"Can you believe that he once lived in New York City?" asks Polly.
"I never do." says Officer Grace.

Episode 12

The Mutual Broadcasting System brings you another episode of Life in Hyperion.

Today's episode, "The Beginnings of a Legacy", Part 12

Yesterday, we began our third week with Conrad receiving an accusation from Barry that he stole the machine, an idea quickly shot down. The two then went over the evidence and discovered the answer of the machine's whereabouts. When we last left off, Cy and Conrad were about to relay their discovery to Mr. Gold...

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Cy then again pockets the keys and walks back into the building with Conrad.
They walk their way to Mr. Gold's office and knock on the door.
"Come in." says Mr. Gold.
"Hello, sir." says Cy as he and Conrad enter.
"What is it now, detectives?" asks Mr. Gold.
"Mr. Gold, we think we know where your machine is." says Cy.
"Where is it, detectives?" asks Mr. Gold.
"Follow me in this line of reasoning with me and Conrad." says Cy.
"Okay, Scott. I'll give you your chance." says Mr. Gold.
"As we know, we think the machine was stolen." says Cy.
"We all know that." says Conrad.
"But we think it wasn't stolen." says Cy.
"It wasn't?" asks Mr. Gold.
"Right. A few minutes ago, I happened to put the keys I found into the lock in the
front door of the building and it fit." says Cy.
"I see it, but what's that gotta do with the pinball machine?" says Mr. Gold.
"The answer to the case of the missing pinball machine is that it wasn't missing to
begin with." says Cy.
"It wasn't?" says Mr. Gold.
"You see, we all just assumed it was stolen from the fact that it's not in the green
room. We questioned everyone we could ask and found no reason to steal the machine."
says Conrad.
"Well, the thief was from the outside." says Mr. Gold.
"That's another assumed fact. When we visited the Shulmans, the head of the
family mentioned giving the two guys he hired a set of keys. As we were leaving their
house today, I found a set of keys in the driveway." says Cy.
"What does that prove?" asks Mr. Gold.
"Our theory is that when one of the two men were getting in the truck at the
Shulmans', the keys must have slipped out of his pocket. When they got here, they
couldn't find the keys, so they left their truck here and reported a successful delivery
rather than face facts." says Cy.
"So, what you're saying is... " says Mr. Gold.
"The pinball machine is still in the truck." says Cy.
"I'll phone the delivery company and see." says Mr. Gold, who then runs back into
the station.
"Amazing, Cy." says Conrad.
"It was a close one, wasn't it, Conrad?" says Cy.
"I see." says Conrad.
"I did it, Conrad, I did it." says Cy.
"And you finally got over boredom." says Conrad.
"And I think I made a new girlfriend" says Cy.
"You did." says Conrad.
Just then, Mr. Gold walks out of the station.
"The two delivery guys fessed up to what happened. The pinball machine in their
truck, all right." says Mr. Gold.
"All in a day's work." says Cy.
"Right, detectives. I'll call Mr. Shulman and tell him." says Mr. Gold, who then
runs back into the building.
"Conrad, I do believe that we have proven ourselves as experts of mystery-
solving." says Cy.
"Right, Cy." says Conrad.
An hour later, the two delivery men finally complete their job and place the new
pinball machine in the green room. As they do, Joanne walks up to Cy.
"So, you solved it today, detectives?" says Joanne.
"I fessed up to your father about our true identities. He's proud of our work." says
Cy.
"Good of you to do that, Cy." says Joanne.
"Well, are you still up for that date tonight?" asks Cy.
"Let me think... yes." says Joanne.
"Good to know, good to know." says Cy.
That evening, Cy walks his way back up the Shulmans' driveway as he readies to
take Joanne on their date. As he walks up, he whistles a happy tune.
He soon reaches the front door and rings the doorbell. The chimes that rings out
further cement the wealth of the Shulmans. After a moment, one of the large oak door
swing open.
"Good evening, Cy." says Joanne, dressed in a red gingham knee-skirt dress.
"Good evening, Joanne. I've come to take you out on that date." says Cy.
"I'm ready for you. Why don't you come inside?" asks Joanne.
"I guess I can." says Cy, who then steps inside.
"I wanted the folks to really met you before we go out." says Joanne.
"That would help in our relationship, but I've had the honor of meeting your father
and grandfather, and I can't think of two more interesting people." says Cy.
"That's only a small sample of my family." says Joanne as she guides Cy into the
living room.
Sitting in various chairs are the members of Joanne's family. Joe I and Joe II are
sitted a fair distance from each other. A woman bolt out of her chair as she runs over to
meet Joanne and Cy.
"It's so wonderful to meet the man that's finally dating my Joanne." says Mrs.
Shulman, looking the Fran Drescher type, down to the hair, voice, and matter of dress.
"Yes, ma'am." says Cy.
"Please, call me Loretta. This ain't no formal gig." says Mrs. Shulman.
"Okay... Loretta." says Cy.
"Please, sit down." says Loretta.
"I guess I should before I take Joanne out." says Cy, who then takes a seat next to
Joanne on a sofa.
"Joanne's finally dating, and at only 23." says Loretta.
"It's not that big of a deal." says Joanne.
"It is to me." says Loretta.
"I'm just amazed at how fast it went. The two only met today." says Joe II.
"In this day and age, that's a long time." says Joe I.
"Don't start, dad." says Joe II.
"Yeah, granddad, don't start." says Joe III.
"I just can't believe that my granddaughter is dating someone like you." says Joe I.
"You mean, a radio show host or a Gentile?" asks Cy.
"The latter. I always thought Joanne would go for a nice boy of our people. Instead, she went with you." says Joe I.
"I think myself a great catch." says Cy.
"That's not the point, son." says Joe I.
"You seem to be impressed with me earlier." says Cy.
"That's when you were a so-called detective. Now, you think you're my granddaughter's boyfriend." says Joe I.
"I'm this close to leaving." says Cy.
"Then leave. We're not keeping you here." says Joe I.
"Ease off my boyfriend, grandpa." says Joanne.
"Oh, Joanne, I just can't get off the subject." says Joe I.
"Allow me to change the subject myself." says Cy.
"Don't, Cy." says Joanne.
"I, for one, have an open mind about this." says Loretta.
"Me, too." says Joe II.
"You two keep outta this. This is between me and the boy here." says Joe I.
"Grandpa, just accept him." says Joanne.
"He'll have to prove himself to me." says Joe I.
"How?" asks Cy.
"Convert." says Joe I.
"I can't. I love pork too much." says Cy.
"Come on, Cy, let us leave." says Joanne.
"I'm with you. I've had enough." says Cy as he and Joanne get off the sofa and walk out of the room.
"You must be accept him as Joanne's suitor, dad." says Joe II.
"Just another arguement to me." says Loretta.
"I can't believe I let him get to me. I'm just like my mother in that respect, or lack of." says Cy as he and Joanne walk down the driveway.
"She sounds like an interesting person." says Joanne.
"She is. She was an actress on television and in film." says Cy.
"And who was your mother, Cy?" asks Joanne.
"The late Debralee Scott." says Cy.
"Sorry to hear that." says Joanne.
"That's okay. I'm over it." says Cy.
"I'm glad." says Joanne.

Episode 11

The Mutual Broadcasting System brings you another episode of Life in Hyperion.

Today's episode: "The Beginnings of a Legacy", Part 11

Last week, the new pinball machine meant for the WHYP green room disappeared and Cy, trying to build his own legacy, decides to go looking for it, with Conrad as his sidekick. On the way, he manages to solve another mystery. When we last left off, Cy and Conrad had returned to WHYP after following a lead, with no success...

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just then, Barry walks into the room with Mr. Gold.
"There's your thief, right there." says Barry, pointing to Conrad.
"What crime are you accusing Conrad of, Barry?" asks Cy.
"He's the one who stole your pinball machine." says Barry.
"That's impossible." says Conrad.
"He did, and they've been using this stupid detective routine to throw us off his
trail." says Barry.
"Barry, I'd watch the fingers, if I were you." says Cy.
"Admit, Conrad, you stole it." says Barry.
"I did not steal that pinball machine." says Conrad.
"I hear you were a pinball champion. I guess you thought you would like to have
that machine all to yourself." says Barry.
"Barry, Conrad had no reason to steal that machine. Besides, how could he?" says
Cy.
"He could have broken in." says Barry.
"Let me get this straight. Conrad came and broke the front door down, came in, stole the machine, and left with fixing back up the door so no one would notice." says Cy.
"That's right." says Barry.
"Barry, your accusation is unfounded and dumb, just like you." says Cy.
Barry then retreats from the room.
"That Barry. Thinking I would steal the machine." says Conrad.
"Maybe he's not wrong." says Mr. Gold.
"I found no evidence connecting Conrad to the crime." says Cy.
"If you say so." says Mr. Gold.
"I think something happened to the machine as it was moved from the Shulmans'
home to the station." says Cy.
"What next?" asks Mr. Gold.
"I think we'll visit the police." says Cy.
As Cy and Conrad turn to the door, the jangle of the keys ring out from Cy's
pocket.
"What is that?" asks Phil.
"Oh, these? These are a set of keys I found at the Shulmans'." says Cy as he pulls
out the keys.
"That looks like the set of keys I loaned to Mr. Shulman, so his guys could place
the machine in the green room." says Mr. Gold.
"So, these keys open the door to the station?" says Cy.
"Of course they do." says Mr. Gold.
Cy then repockets the keys as Conrad writes down the information and both leave
the green room. Cy and Conrad walk their way back to the front of the station. Cy then
looks at the door. With careful hands, he unpockets the keys and places one in the front
door lock.
"It fits." notes Cy.
"So Mr. Gold was right." says Conrad.
"Now we figure out what happened to the pinball machine." says Cy.
"That can't be too hard." says Conrad.
"Let's think for a minute here, Conrad." says Cy.
"I guess it's our only course of action at this point." says Conrad.
"If Mr. Shulman gave one of the two moving men the set of keys and he lost them,
when would he notice it?" says Cy.
"I think maybe sometime during the trip over here." says Conrad.
"Think harder, when would he notice?" asks Cy.
"When he got here with the machine." says Conrad.
"Right, and he would have searched for the keys to open the door." says Cy.
"And he wouldn't have found them, having lost them." says Conrad.
"So, then what would he do?" asks Cy.
"Admit he lost to them." says Conrad.
"To whom?" asks Cy.
"To the other moving guy." says Conrad.
"And anyone else?" asks Cy.
"I don't know there." says Conrad.
"During this whole thing, we haven't heard a single word about the keys or the
moving men." says Cy.
"Those people would have been the first people contacted by Mr. Gold when he
saw the machine missing." says Conrad.
"And what do think they said to him?" asks Cy.
"That they delivered the machine to the station." says Conrad.
"Causing Mr. Gold to believe it was stolen." says Cy.
"But was it truly stolen?" asks Conrad.
"I don't think so." says Cy.
"So, when the moving men got here and couldn't find the keys." says Conrad.
"And with a large amount of money from Mr. Shulman they would receive upon
delivery of the machine." says Cy.
"They would have said that they done so and kept the machine with them." says
Conrad.
"So the pinball machine's still in the moving van down at the main offices of the
moving company, untouched." says Cy.
"Then that means that... " says Conrad.
"We have our answer." says Cy.
"Let us tell Mr. Gold." says Conrad.

Tomorrow, Cy and Conrad relay their answer to Mr. Gold, Cy and Joanne begin their first date, and we finish the first serial of the program.

Episode 10

The Mutual Broadcasting System brings you another episode of Life in Hyperion.

Today's episode: "The Beginnings of a Legacy", Part 10

Yesterday, Cy and Conrad, in their search to discover the whereabouts of the pinball machine, discover something else: that Cy's mystery woman is actually Joanne Shulman, the daughter of the man who donated the pinball machine. That man, and his father and founder of the company, soon meet up with our detectives...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

"Don't worry, these two are looking for it, aren't you?" says Joe II.
"That's right, sir." says Cy.
"Have we given any clues?" asks Joe I.
"Not right away. All you gave us was the machine's bio, not to mention... " says
Cy before being interupted by Conrad, "Don't, Cy."
"You just find the machine." says Joe II.
"You go find it." says Joe I before he rattles something in Yiddish.
"Be careful, he sounds mean." says Cy.
"You know Yiddish?" asks Joe I.
"Comes from living in New York." says Cy.
"Are you... ?" asks Joe I.
"No, I'm not." says Cy.
"Thought so." says Joe I, who then leaves the room.
"What help you guys are." says Cy.
"Just find my machine before I fire you." says Joe II.
"You don't work for you, Mr. Shulman." says Cy.
"We'll see about that." says Joe II.
"I see, sir. I'm just wondering, is there anyone who would want you to go under?"
asks Cy.
"I have my competitors, detectives. They all want me to go under." says Joe II.
"Relax, sir. I'm just trying to get in all the facts. I believe I'm closing in on the
answer." says Cy.
"You better find it, detectives." says Joe II, who then leaves the room.
"I must apologize for my father. He's very worried about the coffee business."
says Joanne.
"I can see that. Coffee is a valuable trading tool and each move he makes pays off
in tons." says Cy.
"I wish we could be more helpful." says Joanne.
"I don't know about your father, but I know you can be more helpful." says
Conrad.
"Me, too." says Cy.
"Sorry I couldn't be more help." says Joanne.
"That's okay." says Cy.
"Let me show you the way out." says Joanne.
"You're a nice girl. Sweet, innocent." says Cy as they start walking to the door.
"Are you saying I did it?" asks Joanne.
"No, I'm saying you didn't do it." says Cy.
"You do seem like nice guys, detectives." says Joanne as they reach the door.
"We deal ourselves in nice." says Cy.
"How can someone like you be so nice?" asks Joanne as she opens the door.
"My mother always believed in people, even if people don't believe in themselves." says Cy.
"Really?" says Joanne.
"Yeah. That's one part of her legacy I'll keep." says Conrad.
"That's interesting. And have you started looking for your own legacy, Cy?" says Joanne as Cy and Conrad begins to step out the door.
"You bet. Why do you think we're here?" says Cy.
"Glad to hear that." says Joanne.
"Let's go, Cy, before Mr. Gold gets wind of this." says Conrad.
"I'm sorry you have to leave." says Joanne.
"Say, may I have the pleasure of your company once again?" asks Cy.
"When the case is over, a date for that night." says Joanne.
"I'll try and finish today." says Cy.
"Goodbye... detectives." says Joanne as she closes the door.
"All this for nothing?" asks Conrad.
"Well, I finally met Joanne again, and this time, we'll gonna keep in touch." says Cy.
"However it may hurt us and our careers." says Conrad.
Cy and Conrad then turn and begin to head down the driveway. As they get
underway, Cy feels something at his feet. He stops and looks down.
"Look, Conrad, a set of keys." says Cy.
"I see that." says Conrad.
"I wonder who lost them." says Cy as he picks them up.
"I wouldn't know." says Conrad.
"Let's get back to the station." says Cy as he pockets the keys and resumes
walking, with Conrad following behind.
Cy and Conrad then return to the radio station and makes a bee-line for Mr. Gold's
office. As they enter Mr. Gold's office, they see that he's on the phone.
"He said I hired them?" asks Mr. Gold to the man on the other end, apparently Mr.
Shulman reporting on Cy and Conrad's visit.
"Hello, Mr. Gold." says Cy.
"Pardon me, my hired detectives have just arrived." says Mr. Gold with an air of
sarcasm.
Mr. Gold then hangs up the phone with a quick good-bye.
"As you now know, we did make a visit to the Shulmans." says Cy.
"I heard, and did you two find anything?" says Mr. Gold.
"Only that two men brought the machine here. Are they the same two men who
also took the old machine?" says Cy.
"No. Those two men who took the old machine were to take it to Harris' house."
says Mr. Gold.
"We're running low on leads, Conrad." says Cy, who then turns and leaves with
Conrad.
"How about we talk to everyone here again?" asks Conrad.
"I guess we have no choice, for I feel the return of the winter doldrums upon me."
says Cy.
"Right, Cy." says Conrad.
Cy and Conrad then walk their way back to the green room and finds Phil still
there.
"Phil, I would think that you would be gone by now." says Conrad.
"I thought I'd stay until you solved this mystery, detectives." says Phil.
"As you can see, I haven't, Phil, so don't rub it in." says Cy.
"I didn't think you would get far enough to solve it." says Phil.
"I thought I had a lead, but I turned up nothing." says Cy.
"You better find another lead, Detective." says Phil.

Episode 9

The Mutual Broadcasting System brings you another episode of Life in Hyperion.

Today's episode: "The Beginnings of a Legacy", Part 9

Yesterday, Cy and Conrad went over their clues so far and found little that led to the location of the missing pinball machine. Cy then decides to follow the machine back to its source: the Shulman family, which led to a visit to the Shulman house. When we left off, Cy and Conrad were debating their success...

-----------------------------------------------------------

"Listen to that." says Cy as his ears pick up the sounds of an piano being played.
"Sounds nice." says Conrad.
"That's the theme song to our show, and my mother's." says Cy.
"It's coming from the living room." says Conrad.
"I can't believe someone knows the theme song to Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman." says Cy as the two move forward.
"Why would anyone play it?" asks Conrad.
"If you have that much money, you can have anything played by your own personal musician." says Cy.
"I don't think Mr. Shulman has that much money." says Conrad.
"Everyone need a cup of coffee in the morning. Don't tell me you can't get that kind of money." says Cy.
"If you say so." says Conrad.
The two soon arrive in the living room and the place is an expression of wealth,
with a large marble fireplace and expansive furniture. Many paintings hangs on the walls,
some look very expansive themselves.
"Look at this room, Conrad." says Cy.
"I'm looking, I'm looking." says Conrad.
"I think the piano is over there." says Cy, pointing to a grand piano in the middle of the room.
"There's a girl at the piano." says Conrad, pointing her, a girl dressed in fine clothes.
"I can see that." says Cy.
"I wonder who she is?" asks Conrad.
"I've never seen her. Must be Mr. Shulman's hired piano player." says Cy.
"Why would anyone, even someone with lots of money, hire a piano player to play in their home?" asks Conrad.
"Because it brings atmosphere to a room without having a stereo." says Cy.
"Is there one point I can bring up that you don't have an answer for?" asks Conrad.
"We talk to each other for one hour five days a week on the radio, I must do it sometimes." says Cy.
"I can't seem to recall lately." says Conrad.
"There must something I said that you beat me on." says Cy.
"Not to my knowledge." says Conrad.
"Oh, yeah, let me tell you something, Conrad." says Cy.
"I'm waiting." says Conrad.
"Hello, Cy." says a voice.
"Hello, Joanne. Now, as I was saying... " says Cy before he realizes what he has said, "Did I just say, 'Hello, Joanne'?"
"You did." says Conrad.
"Why did I say that?" asks Cy.
"Maybe because I said hello to you." says the voice.
Cy and Conrad then turn their head and spy Joanne standing next to them.
"Joanne!" says Cy.
"Cy, what are you and your friend doing here?" asks Joanne.
"We're here on business." says Cy.
"What kind of business?" asks Joanne.
"Detective business." says Cy.
"I see, Cy." says Joanne.
"By the way, my name is Conrad Harris." says Conrad.
"The Conrad Harris? Cy's co-star on his morning show?" asks Joanne.
"That's me." says Conrad.
"She actually listens to our show." says Cy.
"All my friends do. They think you guys are the funniest duo on the radio." says Joanne.
"We found our fans." says Conrad.
"I guess so, every single one of them." says Cy.
"What do you mean?" asks Joanne.
Before Cy can answer, a man walks into the room.
"Who are you guys?" asks the man, who's dressed in a 1940s fashion and sounds a little like Jackie Mason.
"I'm Cy Scott, and this is my associate, Conrad Harris. We're private detectives hired by Mr. Gold to find the pinball machine." says Cy.
"You mind telling me what you two are doing here?" asks the man.
"Looking for the pinball machine." says Cy.
"Well, everyone's looking for it, including my son." says the man.
"You're Mr. Shulman's father?" asks Cy.
"That's right, Joe Shulman I. I founded this coffee company back in 1953 after having one too many cups of bad coffee." says the man.
"That was the year my mother was born." says Cy.
"Then your mother is as old as my coffee." says Joe I.
"My mother's been dead for about five years, so your coffee's now older than her." says Cy.
"What an interesting way of looking at things, unlike my son." says Joe I.
"I can hear you, dad." says a man, entering the room with Joe III, dressed in a black business three-piece suit and tie combo with a head of graying hair.
"You must be the Mr. Shulman we came to see." says Cy.
"That's right, Joe Shulman II, current CEO of Shulman Coffee." says the man.
"These two came here to ask about that pinball machine you lost." says Joe I.
"I didn't lose it, dad." says Joe II.
"I give you that machine and the minute you sell it, it goes missing." says Joe I.
"I didn't do it on purpose." says Joe II.
"Of course you didn't. No one's that stupid, maybe." says Joe I.
"What's that suppose to mean?" asks Joe II.
"Nothing, son, nothing." says Joe I.
"Guys, forgive for interupting your heart-to-heart fight, but we need some information about the machine. Now, who bought it?" says Cy.
"I did, back in '73. This boy here said he wanted to be a pinball champ, so I got him the machine to practice. He did nothing but play, and he didn't become a pinball champ. All he did was take control of my company." says Joe I.
"You gave it to me when you retired." says Joe II.
"I felt you could run it. I gave you that machine and you decide to sell it for advertising." says Joe I.
"In this economy, you need all the help you can get." says Joe II.
"I know, and the minute he sold it, it goes missing." says Joe I.

Episode 8

The Mutual Broadcasting System brings you another episode of Life in Hyperion.

Today's episode: "The Beginnings of a Legacy", Part 8

Yesterday, Cy and Conrad got the job to locate the missing pinball machine. Meanwhile, Phil met with his crush, Officer Grace, for a brief meeting. Cy and Conrad then interviewed the noonday host, who gave no clue. When we left off, the two had left the studio...

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cy and Conrad then leave the control room and walk his way back to the green room. As they open the door, they find Phil engaged in reading a magazine and no sign of Officer Grace.
"Where's Officer Grace?" asks Cy.
"She went to file the report. She thought she had no more information for you,
Cy." says Phil, putting down his book.
"I see, and do you?" says Cy.
"Sorry." says Phil.
"Well, I believe that we're within reach of a trail. We just gotta find it." says Cy.
"What makes you think you can find anything?" asks Phil.
"For the first time in many days, I'm getting a real rush from trying to solve this mystery and I ain't gonna stop until I do." says Cy.
"And what about the meantime?" asks Phil.
"Well, it's clear that I need more information. I talked to Barry and Terry and they had nothing, as usual. I also spoke with Chuck, the noonday guy, and he told me that he saw them taking out the old machine yesterday." says Cy.
"What does it sound like to you?" asks Phil.
"That I need to investigate further. I think I'll talk to whoever donated the machine." says Cy, who then turns and leaves the room, along with Conrad.
"Those two. How bored must they be to do this?" says Conrad.
Cy and Conrad then walk their way back to Mr. Gold. As they re-enter the office, Mr. Gold is on the phone with someone.
"I know that. I know how valuable that machine was to you. I have someone
looking into it." says Mr. Gold, with the last line said as he turned his eyes to Cy.
"I see you're talking to whoever donated the machine." says Cy.
"I'm sorry, my investigator and his friend is in my office. I'll talk to you later."
says Mr. Gold, who then hangs up the phone.
"I came here to ask you about the donors of the machine, the Shulmans. I see
you're in contact with them. All I need from you right now is the address." says Cy.
"Like you're gonna get it." says Mr. Gold.
"Then the Shulmans will stop donating money to this station." says Cy.
"Here's the address, detectives." says Mr. Gold as he writes it down on a piece of
paper.
"Thanks, Mr. Gold." says Cy as he takes the piece of paper.
"Yeah. I'm sure they'll tell you what you want." says Mr. Gold.
Cy and Conrad then leave the room and head back to the green room. As Cy and Conrad enter the room, Phil is still reading the same book.
"Guess who's the donors of the machine?" asks Cy as he closes the door.
"Who?" asks Phil, putting his book down.
"The Shulmans." says Conrad.
"They're the third-richest people in town." says Cy.
"I know. The head of the family made his fortune in coffee." says Phil.
"They made quite a fortune." says Conrad.
"Right, and their main stock is in their own company, Shulman Coffee. That
would explain their need to advertise on this station. They seem the kind of people to
have received a 1973 Goldman & Todd deluxe pinball machine." says Cy.
"Are you gonna see them?" asks Phil.
"If they want their pinball machine back." says Cy, who then turns to leaves.
"Listen, Cy, are you sure you want to do that? What if Mr. Gold finds out?" asks
Conrad.
"Trust me, Conrad. If we are to solve this case, we must trace the machine back
to its source, or to its last known location." says Cy.
"I just hope you know what to do." says Conrad.
"Me, too." says Cy.
Cy and Conrad then walk down the hallway and into the lobby of the station.
They leave the station and walk their way downtown, to the address of the Shulmans. As
they walk up their driveway, they notice the up-scale design of the house.
"This looks to be a big house." says Conrad.
"Yes, Conrad. One can make his life's fortune in coffee if he knows how to sell
it." says Cy.
"Let's just hope Mr. Shulman's wealth hasn't made him unable to talk to the lower
classes." says Cy.
"Why are we even doing this?" asks Conrad.
"Because we have to." says Cy.
"What if Mr. Shulman knows who we are?" asks Conrad.
"The way Mr. Gold treats us, he would have told Mr. Shulman nothing about us.
All he thinks is Barry and Terry." says Cy.
"He's bound to have heard us anyway, Cy." says Conrad.
"Conrad, if what our ratings, that Mr. Gold gives us, are true, we are in no danger
of being found out." says Cy as he and Conrad reach the front doors.
The two large, oak-carved front doors stand to note the wealth inside.
"I don't know, Cy. I mean, someone in that head must have heard of us." says Conrad.
"Conrad, we are in no danger." says Cy, who then knocks on the door.
"I hope you're right, Cy, since we can't afford to lose our jobs." says Conrad.
After a minute, the door opens as Cy lifts his hat above his head and says, "Good day to you."
"Who are you two?" asks a man, looking a little older than the duo, dressed in dress pants, white button shirt with red tie.
"We're Scott and Harris, private eyes. We've been hired by Mr. Gold to look for the missing pinball machine." says Cy.
"Please come in." says the man.
"Thank you very much." says Cy, who then walks inside along with Conrad.
"It's nice to see people at work finding that machine." says the man.
"Do you mind telling us who you are?" asks Cy.
"I'm Joe Shulman III." says the man.
"So, your father is the man we should speak to." says Cy.
"I'll get him if you wish to speak to him." says Joe III.
"Please." says Cy.
"I'll be right back." says Joe III, who then walks away.
"We made it so far, Conrad." says Cy.
"Yeah, but for how long?" asks Conrad.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tomorrow, Cy and Conrad continue their visit to the Shulman house, and meet up with a very important member of the household.

Episode 7

The Mutual Broadcasting System brings you another episode of Life in Hyperion.

Today's episode: "The Beginnings of a Legacy", Part 7

Yesterday, Cy and Conrad discovered that the new pinball machine for the green room was missing, so Cy decides to go looking for it, thinking that finding it will help to begin his legacy. With Conrad in tow, the duo see Mr. Gold to get the job. Meanwhile, we meet another character, Officer Grace Baker of the Hyperion Police. When we left off, Officer Grace had just left Mr. Gold's office...

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Officer Grace then walks her way from Mr. Gold's office to the green room. As she opens the door, she spots Phil, staring at the empty space where the pinball machine should be.
"Hello, Phil." says Officer Grace, entering the room.
"Oh, hello, Officer Grace." speaks Phil in a nervous matter.
"I see that the pinball machine is truly missing." says Officer Grace.
"It should be, or you wouldn't be here." says Phil.
"So, how's the job going?" asks Officer Grace.
"Going well, going very well." says Phil.
"Mine's been the usual, the same." says Officer Grace.
"That's good to know." says Phil.
"So, hmm, I'm here to ask you about the pinball machine." says Officer Grace.
"Well, it's gone." says Phil.
"That I can see. Anything else?" says Officer Grace.
"Not really, I don't have much to add." says Phil.
"Well, can you think of anything?" asks Officer Grace.
"Not really." says Phil.
"Well, I see you two are hard at work." says Cy as he and Conrad enter the room.
"So, how did things go with Mr. Gold?" asks Phil.
"Great, he felt we should have no part in it, so we got the case anyway. All we
have to do now is solve it." says Cy.
"Fine, you two. I guess I have to refer to you as detectives." says Phil, beginning
to fall into his place with Cy and Conrad's act.
"Phil, why must you play along?" asks Officer Grace.
"I wanna help in this, Officer Grace." says Phil.
"Whatever you say." says Officer Grace.
"Here's where the pinball machine is supposed to be." says Phil, pointing to the
empty spot.
"I see." says Cy, walking over to the spot.
Cy then lowers himself into a pitcher's position and examines the area. Cy spots
the four dents in the carpet where the old pinball machine once stood. He moves his hand
slowly over one of the dents. He then gets back up and turns his attention to Conrad,
Officer Grace, and Phil..
"Say, how long ago was the old machine here?" asks Cy.
"I last saw it Saturday, Cy, as you very well know." says Phil.
"What about you, Officer Grace?" asks Cy.
"I haven't seen the machine for a long while. I don't know what to tell you." says
Officer Grace.
"That's okay. I feel I have enough for the both of you." says Cy.
Officer Grace looks over at Phil as she admires Cy's commitment to solve the
mystery.
"Cy, what findings have you made so far?" asks Officer Grace.
"Good question. I looked at the area and see the four dents left by the old
machine. When I moved my hand over one, I felt no sign that the machine was here
before it was stolen." says Cy.
"Maybe you should ask Mr. Gold about the new machine?" says Phil.
"Perhaps I should, but not now. I think I'll go see two morons about a machine." says Cy as he turns to leave, with Conrad following behind.
"I wonder where they're going?" asks Phil to Officer Grace.
"I think he's gonna surprise their rivals in their native habitat." says Officer Grace.
Cy closes the door behind him and walks down the hallway and turns a corner into another hallway, leading to a door with the lettering, "Barry & Terry", written on it. Cy gives the door a knock and hears Barry invite him in.
"Hello, Cy and Conrad." says Terry.
"Don't mock us now. We're detectives on a case." says Cy as he closes the door.
"Pardon me, detectives." says Terry.
"Detectives, what brings you and your associate around here?" asks Barry.
"I came here to talk about that missing pinball machine, you two." says Cy.
"I don't know anything that machine." says Terry.
"All I know is that one of the sponsors donated it in exchange for air time on our
program." says Barry.
"I think Mr. Gold wants to title the programs after the sponsors, the way he
talks." says Terry.
"So, a commercial on your program that would have subtracted time from you
guys." says Cy.
"Ease up, you two, we have no reason to steal it." says Barry.
"We're better stealing audience." says Terry.
"Cy, I wouldn't question them further." says Conrad.
"Why not?" asks Cy.
"Because it might hurt us come sweeps week." says Conrad.
"Gentlemen, I leave you to your wallow." says Cy.
Cy then turns back and heads back out the door without saying another word with
Conrad following behind.
"That Cy. He keeps it up, he may end up paying for it." says Barry.
In the radio studio itself, the WHYP Radio Lunch Wagon is wrapping up its broadcast day. Inside the studio is a man dressed in a dress shirt and pants, with a thinning scalp.
"And so, this is Chris Hardin, saying onto you, see ya next time here at the WHYP Radio Lunch Wagon." says the host.
And with that, the engineer in the control room plays the closing theme and Chris exits the studio and meets Cy and Conrad as he leaves.
"Hello there, Chris." says Cy.
"Hello, Cy. Hello, Conrad." says Chris.
"We're here to talk to you." says Cy.
"What for?" asks Chris.
"We're detectives, trying to solve this mystery." says Cy.
"Okay, detectives." says Chris, feeling it best to go along with Cy.
"We're investigating the missing pinball machine and I wanna know if you have any hints for us." says Conrad.
"I wish I did. I did see them take out the old machine on Sunday night." says Chris.
"Can you tell me more?" asks Cy.
"I came here to help with the WHYP Sunday Night Service and I saw two men take out the old machine." says Chris.
"Any more info you can share?" asks Conrad.
"No, sorry. I wish I did." says Chris.
"All right. I may see you later, so don't leave town." says Cy, who then turns and leave, along with Conrad.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tomorrow, Cy and Conrad continue their search for clues and the missing pinball machine, which will lead Cy down a path to another piece of his legacy.

Episode 6

The Mutual Broadcasting System brings you another episode of Life in Hyperion.

Today's episode: "The Beginnings of a Legacy", Part 6

Last week, we began our series with a visit to WHYP radio and its employees, mainly Cy Scott and Conrad Harris. After going on the air, Cy discussed how he couldn't get out of boredom. Then, we met Mr. Gold, who told the duo that someone has donated a pinball machine. Mr. Gold also gave the ratings and Cy gave his opinion of them.
Cy then made his way to Cathy's Tavern, where he met a mysterious woman named Joanne, who told Cy that he should make his own legacy, as a means of getting out of boredom. The weekend soon passes and Cy and Conrad arrive back at WHYP and the green room, where they find the new machine gone...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Cy and Conrad stare at the empty space, as well as Mr. Gold.
"Where is it?" asks Mr. Gold.
"Mr. Gold?" says Cy.
"Oh, you two, as you can see, something's happened to our 1973 Goldman & Todd deluxe pinball machine." says Mr. Gold.
"That I can see." says Cy.
Just then, Phil enters the room.
"Hey, guys, still taking in the new machine?" asks Phil.
"Phil, it's not here." says Cy, gesturing to the empty space.
"I see it now. I guess Conrad's not getting a turn." says Phil.
"I guess not." says Cy.
"I wonder where it went." says Mr. Gold.
"Well, I guess me and Conrad should get ready for our show today." says Cy, walking towards a chair.
"I guess we should." says Conrad, following behind.
As Cy and Conrad take their seats, Mr. Gold still remains standing as he wonders
at the whereabouts of the new pinball machine.
"I guess I should go check on Barry and Terry for you guys." says Phil to Cy and Conrad.
"Thanks." says Cy.
"You're welcome." says Phil as he makes his way out of the green room.
Mr. Gold slowly moves away from the empty space as he walks towards the door.
"I'm gonna report this to the police." says Mr. Gold, who then makes his leave
from the green room.
"I wonder where that machine is." says Cy.
"Don't worry, they'll find it." says Conrad.
"I hope so." says Cy.
"I wonder who would want to steal a pinball machine?" says Phil.
"There's a question. The theft of a machine that one wouldn't normally steal."
says Cy.
"That is an interesting question, but what's the answer?" asks Conrad.
"My mother liked to say that when something goes missing, you should go look for it." says Cy.
"But who wants to find a pinball machine?" asks Conrad.
Cy thinks for a few seconds as Conrad's eyes and Phil's eyes focus on him. He then has a thought.
"I know someone who can." says Cy.
"Who do you know that can solve this?" asks Conrad.
"Us, we're gonna solve it." says Cy.
"I know you're trying to find your own legacy but we can't solve a mystery." says Conrad.
"Why not? I'll be fun and it'll get us out of being bored at last." says Cy.
"I guess it wouldn't hurt to solve a mystery." says Conrad.
"There we go. Now, the first thing we do is talk to the victim of this crime." says Cy.
"I'm standing right here, Cy." says Conrad.
"Not you, my partner. I'm talking about Mr. Gold." says Cy.
. Two hours later, Cy and Conrad are walking down the hallway to Mr. Gold's
office. Cy is smoking a cigar as he knocks on the office door.
"Come in." says Mr. Gold, writing down something.
Cy then opens the door and he and Conrad walk into the room. Cy's face is
shadowed by his hat, pulled down over his forehead.
"What do you want, Scott and Harris?" asks Mr. Gold.
"We were to solve a mystery." says Cy.
"What mystery?" asks Mr. Gold.
"The mystery of your missing pinball machine." says Cy.
"Really?" says Mr. Gold.
"Don't underestimate me, my friend. I assure you that we are good at what we do." says Cy.
"What do you want, you two?" asks Mr. Gold.
"We know that a pinball machine was stolen from this radio station." says Cy.
"That's right." says Mr. Gold.
"We know that it was a 1973 Goldman & Todd deluxe pinball machine." says Cy.
"That's right." says Mr. Gold.
"And as you said before, those kinds of machines are rare." says Cy.
"That's what I said." says Mr. Gold.
"Listen, Mr. Gold. I will locate your missing machine for a small fee. Let's say, uh, $100?" says Cy.
"$100? To find the machine?" says Mr. Gold.
"You don't have to pay me when I find it. Just keep in mind that if you don't pay, you'll get yours." says Cy.
"We'll do it for free." says Conrad.
"Deal." says Mr. Gold.
"Why did you do that for?" asks Cy.
"Remember, Mr. Gold is the man with our jobs in his hands and it wouldn't be
helpful if we ask to be paid when our pay is at stake." says Conrad.
Just then, the door to the office opens and Officer Grace Baker, one of Hyperion's
finest, walks in. Her blue police uniform is off-set by her long curly brown locks with the
police officer's cap on her head and the black police coat.
"Hello, Mr. Gold." says Officer Grace as she sees Cy and Conrad..
"Officer Grace, I'm sure you're familiar with Scott and his friend Harris." says Mr. Gold, gesturing at Cy and Conrad.
"Yes, I am." says Officer Grace.
"Don't mind them, they're here to help me. Say they wanna solve this mystery." says Mr. Gold.
"Then I might as well get this report filled out." says Officer Grace.
"Gladly." says Mr. Gold.
"Now, tell me how you got this pinball machine?" says Officer Grace.
Mr. Gold explains, "I made this deal with Joe Shulman, the owner of Shulman Coffee, for ad space on the air, in exchange for a new pinball machine for the green room. His father had bought the machine and he was giving it to me, saying it had no purpose. It was to be delivered overnight but it hasn't come in yet."
"I see, and has anyone else known about this new machine?" asks Officer Grace.
"I told that Scott character and his buddies about it. That Conrad, he's a former champion at pinball, so I hear." says Mr. Gold.
"Anything else?" asks Officer Grace.
"Not really." says Mr. Gold.
"If you don't mind, we'd like to take over the questioning for now. We'll let you know of my findings." says Cy.
"Okay, detectives." says Officer Grace as she leaves the room.

Episode 5

The Mutual Broadcasting System brings you another episode of Life in Hyperion.

Today's episode: "The Beginnings of a Legacy", Part 5

Yesterday, Cy made his way to Cathy's Tavern, where he aired further opinions of his life. Then, a strange woman named Joanne entered the place and she and Cy hit it off. Time soon passes by the couple...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two hours later, as the jukebox plays "Wichita Lineman", Joanne and Cy share a dance in the dimmed lights of the tavern.
"You dance so well." says Joanne.
"And this is without a single lesson." says Cy.
"I know." says Joanne.
"My mother taught me everything I know." says Cy.
"There she is again." says Joanne.
"My mother? How long have I gone now?" asks Cy.
"About five minutes." says Joanne.
"That's a record for me in times like this." says Cy.
"Careful to cover yourself, aren't you?" asks Joanne.
"That's what my mother told me." says Cy.
"You know, things would be much easier if you didn't mention her a lot." says Joanne.
"I don't mention her that much." says Cy.
"I've counted 14 times in the last half-hour." says Joanne.
"Quick on your wits, I see. You must be of a higher raising. Certainly can't get those brains from the local high school with the rest of these people." says Cy.
"I can't fool you for a minute." says Joanne.
"You know where that comes from." says Cy.
"Don't you have anything of your own?" asks Joanne.
"What do you mean?" asks Cy.
"I mean, something that all yours, that your mother never helped you in?" asks Joanne.
"I can't think of a thing, except my job." says Cy.
"Jobs, even full-time ones, are just temporary. What I mean is something that you can pass on." says Joanne.
"I've often thought about that but I've always felt my mother's legacy is enough for my offspring." says Cy.
"Well, maybe they would like something of yours to inherit, so not everything that get is secondhand." says Joanne.
"I would be nice to steak my own claim to fame, as it were." says Cy.
"There's the idea. Your own legacy." says Joanne.
"It's nice to dance with you. You make me think. Most girls I've known don't do that." says Cy.
"Maybe when our kids ask about how we met, we can tell them that you and I met and it was love at first dance." says Joanne.
"What a wit you have about you." says Cy.
"I'd like to think of it as my legacy." says Joanne.
"Why? Don't you have one?" asks Cy.
"Not really. Like you, I have feel that what I've inherit I will pass on to my offspring." says Joanne.
"Maybe the two of us can find our own legacies together." says Cy.
"That would be nice to do." says Joanne.
"Just the two of us." says Cy.
1:30 am soon rolls around and as the tavern closes down for the night, Cy and Joanne stand outside it, looking up at the stars.
"Look at those stars, Cy." says Joanne.
"They sure are bright up there. I wish I could give one to you as a present." says Cy.
"You're a romantic, I'm finding." says Joanne.
"I need more than that for a legacy." says Cy.
"You'll find it." says Joanne as she starts to walk away.
"Will I ever see you again?" asks Cy.
"We'll see about that." says Joanne as she continues to walk away into the night.
Some time later, Cy walks his way into his home. As he closes the door, he stares into the darkness. He then moves into the living room as he looks around for his usual place to sleep, the easy chair.
In the darkness, he spies an object on the mantle. He walks up to it and stares at it, its metal-like skin shining in the moonlight. He stares at it for a few minutes.
"Mama, I've met someone." says Cy.
The weekend soon passes and Monday morning and a new week soon arrive. Outside the WHYP building, Cy and Conrad meet up and Cy is doing a little dance in his step as he walks up.
"What is with you this morning?" asks Conrad.
"Oh, Conrad, my mind has been stoked." says Cy.
"By what or who?" asks Conrad.
"By this girl I met at the tavern on Friday." says Cy.
"Tell me more." says Conrad as he and Cy enter the building.
"Conrad, I walked into that tavern with a chip on my shoulder and she came in with those blue jeans on her legs and she brushed off the chip." says Cy as he and Conrad enter the hallway.
"Anything else?" asks Conrad.
"Well, we spent the whole night talking about how I need my own legacy, to pass down to my offspring." says Cy.
"What makes you think you're gonna have offspring?" asks Conrad.
"I'll ignore that." says Cy.
"I'm glad that you have a crush on someone." says Conrad.
"It's more than a crush. I feel it's love." says Cy.
"Love? Calm down, Cy. You don't know a thing about this girl, it seems." says Conrad.
"I know. My very own mystery woman. I figure that's the first part of my legacy, a strange woman that helped me when I needed it and disappeared into the night, never to be seen again." says Cy.
"As long as it's yours." says Conrad.
"Well, behind this door is a 1973 Goldman & Todd deluxe pinball machine." says Cy.
"I can't wait to get my fingers on those flippers." says Conrad.
"I know you can't." says Cy as he opens the door.
Cy looks in and sees something very wrong.
"Conrad, come here and see what I see." says Cy.
Conrad steps inside the green room and sees Mr. Gold, standing next to an empty space where the old pinball machine was.
"Cy, where's the pinball machine?" asks Conrad.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Next week, Cy and Conrad, confronted with a missing pinball machine, make a decision. This decision will end up affecting Cy's life in more ways than he possibly can imagine.

Episode 4

The Mutual Broadcasting System brings you the fourth episode of Life in Hyperion.

Today's episode: "The Beginnings of a Legacy", Part 4

Yesterday, we meet the slick manager of WHYP, Mr. Gold, Terry's father, who proceeded to give the weekly ratings and Cy gives his opinion. As we begin today, the day soon passes for Hyperion...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

That night, Cy wonders his way into one of Hyperion's best places to eat and drink: Cathy's Tavern. As Cy enters the place, the atmosphere hits him and he relaxes in for the night.
"Good day to you, Cy." says Cathy, the owner, standing behind the bar.
"Same to you." says Cy, listlessly.
"What's with you today?" asks Cathy as Cy takes a barstool.
"Everything." says Cy.
"Oh, that." says Cathy as she pours a mug of beer.
"I can't believe how Mr. Gold treats me and Conrad." says Cy as he gets handed the mug of beer.
"Do tell." says Cathy.
"Today, Mr. Gold came in with the new ratings and we're third from the top." says Cy.
"You're lucky. Last time, you were fourth from the top. How have things been?" says Cathy.
"Let me tell you. I've been five years without my mother and I think the loneliness is starting to get to me." says Cy.
"Maybe you need a girlfriend." says Cathy.
"I don't know about that. I mean, what if I'm not ready to have a relationship yet?" says Cy.
"When was your last relationship?" asks Cathy.
"About a year ago, and it lasted only three days. The girl just didn't excite me enough to keep going." says Cy.
"Is that needed with you?" asks Cathy.
"The best relationships are those where both people can give each other a spark to keep going, in the face of the everyday." says Cy.
"I guess you just need to find that one." says Cathy.
Just then, a young woman walks her way into the tavern. As she enters, she looks around at the surroundings, taking it all in. The sights and sounds and smells surround her as she walks her way to a barstool, which happens to be next to Cy's.
"Excuse me?" asks the woman.
"What do you want, honey?" asks Cathy.
"I'd like something to drink." says the woman.
"What would you like?" asks Cathy.
"I don't know." says the woman.
"Give her a beer." says Cy, looking over at the woman.
"Thank you, good sir." says the woman.
"You don't have to thank me. I always help out those in need." says Cy.
"Thanks for the help anyway." says the woman.
"You know, I've never seen you here before and it would help me if you were to tell me your name so I can remember who I helped." says Cy.
"My name is... Joanne." says the woman.
"You're welcome for my help, Joanne." says Cy.
"Now, help me by telling me your name." says Joanne.
"I'm Cy Scott, noted radio personality." says Cy.
"I listen to you every morning." says Joanne.
"Then you're among those who do and by the ratings, that's a low number." says Cy.
"You're very funny, even in person." says Joanne.
"I'm gonna ignore that wisecrack at my expanse." says Cy.
"Here's your beer, honey." says Cathy.
"Thanks." says Joanne, who then searches for her wallet.
"This one's on me." says Cy.
"Alright." says Cathy, who then moves away.
"Thanks again for the help, Cy." says Joanne.
"No problem. You know, you look to me as someone who's never been in a place like this." says Cy.
"You're right." says Joanne.
"In fact, you've never really been among people like this." says Cy.
"It shows, doesn't it?" asks Joanne.
"Those blue jeans may fool everyone else but I was taught differently than most." says Cy.
"Nice to hear." says Joanne.
"Come on, drink up. Don't waste your chance to join the common folk." says Cy.
"If you insist." says Joanne, who then takes a sip of her beer and rears back at the reaction.
"That wasn't so bad." says Cy.
"I've never drank this stuff before." says Joanne.
"You'll get used to it." says Cy.
"Why are you helping me so?" asks Joanne.
"I don't know the answer to that. It's just that the second you sat down, something came over me and I can't explain it." says Cy.
"Maybe it's love." says Joanne.
"That fast? I don't know. Maybe I should spend more time with you to find out." says Cy.
"I would enjoy your company." says Joanne.
"So would I." says Cy.

Episode 3

The Mutual Broadcasting System brings you the third episode of Life in Hyperion.

Today's episode: "The Beginnings of a Legacy", Part 3

Yesterday, we saw Cy and Conrad do their morning show and ran into their rivals. Afterwards, Cy told Conrad about the listless feeling he's been having lately. As we head back to the green room...

------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Good morning, guys." says a man as he enters the green room.
The man, in his mid-50s, is dressed in a beige leisure suit, with slick oiled black hair upon his head, a thick mustache on his face, along with tinted glasses and an oily demeaner. Just everything about him is oily like a Texas well. He is Mr. Gold, Terry's father, and the manager and owner of WHYP.
"Hello, Mr. Gold." says Cy, still playing his game.
"Hello to you, Scott." says Mr. Gold in his usual oily voice.
"Hello, Mr. Gold." says Phil.
"Hello, Turner." says Mr. Gold.
"So, what brings you to us, Mr. Gold?" asks Cy as he ends the game.
"I come here to bring some news." says Mr. Gold.
"You're firing Barry and Terry at last?" says Cy.
"I came in here to look at this pinball machine." says Mr. Gold.
"What for?" asks Cy.
"I'm gonna give it away." says Mr. Gold.
"About time. This machine is terrible." says Cy.
"Are you getting a new one?" asks Conrad.
"A classic one that someone's donating. A 1973 Goldman & Todd deluxe pinball
machine." says Mr. Gold.
"A 1973 Goldman & Todd deluxe pinball machine?" says Conrad.
"That's the one. One of our sponsors is donating it to the station, in exchange for
some air time. It'll be here on Monday." says Mr. Gold.
"One a deal, two a deal." says Cy.
"What?" whispers Conrad to Cy.
"It's what my mother used to say about people like Mr. Gold." whispers back Cy.
"Mr. Gold, would it be all right if I took the old machine?" says Conrad.
"Take it. I have no further use for this old clunker." says Mr. Gold, patting the
machine.
The machine then emits a spark at Mr. Gold's direction.
"Get away from that machine before it kills you." says Cy.
"All right." says Mr. Gold, who then leaves the room.
"A 1973 Goldman & Todd deluxe pinball machine." says Conrad.
"What's so important about them?" asks Cy.
"So important? These machines were built for private homes and upscale
arcades." says Conrad.
"I still don't see it." says Cy.
"There were only 200 machines of that particular type produced that year. Most
of them have long since been consigned to the junk heap, but many machines are still
around. Boy, would I love to have it." says Conrad.
"Well, I think I see it, like finding a lost work of Shakespeare." says Cy.
"That's the idea." says Conrad.
"Well, you'll be playing that machine on Monday and you'll have this old clunker
at your house." says Cy.
"I think I can fix it." says Conrad.
"Let me try." says Conrad, putting a quarter in.
Conrad then pulls back the knob and sends the pinball going. Cy then watches the
pinball move every which way, due to Conrad's handling of the flipper buttons. Just then, Phil enters the room.
"Good morning, guys." says Phil.
"Good morning, my faithful intern." says Cy, slightly depressed.
"What's wrong with you this morning, Cy?" asks Phil.
"It's boredom. It's set in for me." says Cy.
"You're really bored?" says Phil.
"It just came upon me, now I can't get out of it." says Cy.
"That's terrible." says Phil, half-heartedly, instead interested in Conrad's playing.
"I see you noticing Conrad's pinball skills. There's pretty amazing. In high
school, he was a pinball champion. Even made the national championships. Conrad
seems to posess a certain sense about pinball. Remember that song 'Pinball Wizard'?
That's what Conrad is." says Cy.
"Conrad isn't deaf, blind, and dumb." says Phil.
"I mean besides that, just a master of pinball." says Cy.
"I get it now." says Phil.
"I knew you would." says Cy.
"How long will this be?" asks Phil.
"Well, Conrad's playings of pinball have lasted six hours on one quarter." says Cy. "I'll keep it under 30 minutes." says Conrad.
"Can he do that?" asks Phil.
"He once played a quick game in a pizza parlor waiting for his order. He managed to become the high-score champ of the place in twenty minutes." says Cy.
"I wish I had any skill like that." says Phil.
"I can't be taught. You must be born with it." says Cy.
"Okay, guys. I'm not that good." says Conrad.
"There are people who make money being pinball champs." says Cy.
"And I'm not one of those people." says Conrad.
"Have it your way." says Cy.
"Excuse me, you guys." says Mr. Gold as he enters the room.
"What is it, Mr. Gold?" asks Cy.
"I came here to deliver the newest weekly ratings for WHYP." says Mr. Gold.
"How many positions from the bottom are we?" asks Cy.
"This time, you're third from the top." says Mr. Gold.
"And I assume Barry and Terry are on top?" asks Cy.
"You're right, number one again in the ratings." says Mr. Gold.
"That's interesting. Last time, we were fourth from the top." says Cy.
"You're going up." says Mr. Gold.
"But for how long?" asks Cy.
"Cut the game, Scott." says Mr. Gold.
"We know that your son's Terry and that you run the ratings service that does WHYP." says Cy.
"You, accuse me of forging ratings, when I have a third party to oversee the ratings sample. So, take your ratings with pride." says Mr. Gold, who then leaves the room.
"He actually thinks we're bottom of the barrel and Barry and Terry cream of the crop." says Cy.
"We might be, Cy. Ever thought of that?" says Conrad.
"It does bug me." says Cy.
"You can't prove that Mr. Gold rigs the ratings. Besides, he does have a third-party oversee the sample, so they can't be rigged." says Conrad.
"I'll prove it, one of these days." says Cy.

Tomorrow, Cy heads out on the town and meets someone who will change his very life, if not for better or worse, take your pick.
